Reflections of Povertyemerging artists series
Reflections of PovertyWe posed the question, ‘What does poverty look like to you?’ and asked emerging artists to explore this through their unique creative lens.
Sol Battaglio – Left Behind
Sol is 15 years old and lives in Roberts Creek. He loves skateboarding, art and music. He is in Grade 9 and has been drawing pretty much since the day he was born. The piece is meant to depict how the rich are “chucking” money away while the poor are slowly being forgotten.

Ailanni Brampton – Dark Streets
Ailanni grew up on the Sunshine Coast. She is currently an art student at Elphinstone Secondary and will be graduating in 2021. She has a strong passion for art and creative writing. This year Ailanni used the covid lock-down to greatly improve her art skills. She has recently found digital art, gouache, pastel and watercolour to be her favourite mediums.

Eden Shade – Feed Me
Eden Shade is a non-binary mixed media artist, jewelry maker, and musician. They grew up on the Sunshine Coast, and are heavily inspired by nature, their nonsensical dreams, and the human condition.

Zac Harding – NOT MY PROBLEM
Zac is 17 and has lived on the Sunshine Coast all his life. He’s been drawing for as long as he can remember but really started trying to improve in the last couple of years. His main goal with his art is to keep it simple while maintaining a strong sense of character and emotion in each piece of work. This art piece highlights how not sharing and having compassion can create poverty and class separation.

Cleo Decoin – Enslaved
Cleo is a mixed media artist and designer inspired by music and fashion. She likes to mash-up high fashion with streetwear, pair it with unexpected garments, and create a style that is unique and bold. Cleo was born in France and moved to Canada at a young age.
